Sab Cahrunas - Drummer

Sab Cahrunas has been fascinated by the drums from a very early age. He would readily bash away on everything he could find since being three years old. When he was eight his father took him to a Nils Lofgren concert, a live changing moment for the youngster, and after the gig the tech for Nils' drummer Johnny "Bee" Badanjek walked over to the kid sitting on the stairs beside the stage and handed him a broken up drum stick… It was huge and totally beat to pieces but in it Sab could feel the energy of the show still vibrating in his hands, from then-on he was sure that he would become a drummer.

He started buying up records and listening to music obsessively; AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Guns 'N Roses, Metallica, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Cream – just to name a few - but it was his father that showed him the first basic grooves, and, upon recognizing his son’s extraordinary talent, finally gave Sab his very first drum kit on his 13th birthday.

Sab names greats like Matt Sorum (Guns 'N Roses), Neil Peart (Rush), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa), Stewart Copeland (The Police) and Billy Cobham as his first influences, yet it wasn't until he received a lesson from a master jazz drummer that his eyes were opened up to a whole new world. Sab now claims Vinnie Colaiuta, Jojo Mayer and Virgil Donati to be his most influential inspirations and aspirations.

Upon turning 17 he met with Mike Terrana (Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine) for drum lessons and later that same year Sab finally met his childhood idol Billy Cobham backstage after a jazz festival. At age 19 he was fortunate enough to be able to spend one entire week with the legendary Virgil Donati out in L.A. and receive private instructions from the master himself! All these encounters inspired Sab to move onward in professionalizing his talent and making a name for himself.

While still in high school Sab was playing in several rock and/or extreme metal bands. However, he did not hesitate for one second when being asked to play the drums and timpani for a production of the classical operetta “Die Gräfin Mariza" - this meaning he had six weeks' time in order to become proficient at sight-reading and memorize three hours worth of classical music. Balancing out these two extremes also developed his passion for other styles of music such as fusion, funk, reggae, jazz, blues, industrial and live electronica and thus further nourished his versatility.

After graduating from high school Sab was accepted at the renowned Berklee College Of Music in Boston, studying with teachers like Mike Mangini (Steve Vai, Dream Theater), and Sergio Bellotti (Robben Ford, Mike Stern, Wayne Krantz) as well as training his skills in various bands with fellow students and as touring drummer on several tours throughout the USA and Canada.

Sab Cahrunas currently resides in New York City and Berlin, his extraordinary skills and versatility in a variety of styles of music making him a sought-after drummer for studio recordings, TV shows and live tours.
